| dc.description.abstractenglish | This work evaluates the pyrometallurgical reduction of cathode powders from discarded lithium-ion batteries, with the aim of recovering cobalt in metallic or highly reduced forms. Three reducing agents—carbon, aluminum, and silicon—were used. These were initially analyzed through thermodynamic simulations using HSC Chemistry software, based on Ellingham diagrams and chemical equilibrium calculations. Based on these results, compacted pellets were prepared and subjected to heat treatment in a muffle furnace at 1000 °C for two hours. Subsequently, the most favorable conditions were scaled up to a gas furnace. The resulting products were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS), and reflected light photomicrography. The results showed that carbon promoted limited reduction, retaining the cobalt in oxidized phases. Aluminum showed partial reduction with the formation of mixed phases and localized segregation of cobalt-rich regions. Silicon, on the other hand, proved to be the most effective reducing agent, favoring the formation of Co-Si intermetallic compounds and a clear segregation between metallic and slag phases. Heat treatment in a gas furnace confirmed the formation of highly reduced, cobalt-enriched regions. It is concluded that silicon exhibits greater reducing capacity compared to carbon and aluminum under the evaluated conditions, allowing progress toward the recovery of cobalt in more useful forms. Furthermore, it was demonstrated that the combination of characterization techniques is fundamental for interpreting heterogeneous systems and validating the process results. | |
