| dc.description.abstractenglish | Hydrogen is considered a key energy carrier for the decarbonization of the energy system by 2050, but its integration into existing natural gas infrastructures faces critical unresolved safety challenges: steel embrittlement, wide flammability ranges, and absence of quantitative standards for blends. Although the 20% volume limit of hydrogen in mixtures with natural gas is frequently cited in the literature, the physical consequences of leakage scenarios, in terms of dispersion, thermal radiation and overpressure, remain insufficiently quantified. This research provides quantitative evidence on the physical risks associated with H2-NG blends in natural gas pipelines in operation. Four fuels (pure methane, pure hydrogen, and mixtures of 10% and 20% H2) are evaluated under realistic conditions: leaks of 20 mm at 1 MPa and 288 K, evaluated under seasonal variations (−15 °C in winter, 30 °C in summer). The HyRAM+ v6.1 tool is used to calculate physical consequence models and quantitative risk analysis. The results show that: (1) horizontal dispersion increases approximately 30 cm when hydrogen is added to the mixture, requiring greater separation distances; (2) thermal radiation generates first- and second-degree burns in immediate proximity to the leak, while explosions suggested low to medium structural damage in the vicinity; (3) the average individual risk (AIR) for pure methane and hydrogen remains within acceptability criteria set by the Canadian Society for Chemical Engineering. This work provides the quantitative validation that engineers need to update specific safety standards for mixtures and determine safe operational distances. The transition to hydrogen-based energy systems requires reducing the technical uncertainty associated with its implementation in existing grids; In this sense, this document contributes to an essential step to guarantee the safe integration and support of the Colombian natural gas network. | |
