| dc.description.abstractenglish | The presence of cyanide in effluents generated by mining activities constitutes an environmental concern due to its high toxicity and the risk it poses to ecosystems and human health. Although various technologies are available for its treatment, many present limitations associated with high costs, low efficiency, or the generation of secondary waste. In this context, semiconductor-modified carbonaceous materials represent a promising alternative by combining adsorption and photocatalytic processes. In this study, three-dimensional biochars modified with TiO₂-N were developed by hydrothermal synthesis using different HCl–H₂SO₄ volumetric ratios in the precursor solution, with the aim of controlling the formation of coatings deposited on the biochar surface. The obtained biochars were characterized by Confocal Optical Microscopy (COM), FESEM, EDS, XRD, Raman spectroscopy, XPS, cyclic voltammetry, ECSA, and Mott Schottky analysis. Subsequently, the adsorption and photodegradation capacities of the foams were evaluated using methyl orange as a model molecule and a synthetic cyanide solution, in addition to assessing the desorption of adsorbed cyanide. The results evidenced the formation of TiO₂ in anatase and rutile phases in the foam obtained by hydrothermal synthesis for 3 h using a precursor solution composed exclusively of HCl, whereas the sample synthesized using a mixture of 80% HCl and 20% H₂SO₄ for 3 h exhibited characteristic Raman signals of anatase, but not in XRD. Compositions with higher H₂SO₄ content favored the formation of mixed titanates, silicates, and phases associated with Ca, Mg, K, and S. In the methyl orange evaluation, the reference biochar achieved a removal of 99.73%, whereas the sample modified with 100% HCl for 3 h achieved a removal of 60.90%, attributed to the reduction in adsorption sites following surface coating. In the cyanide tests, the same sample achieved a degradation of 71.84% under irradiation, higher than that obtained with unmodified biochar (54.24%). Furthermore, the desorption tests showed lower release of adsorbed cyanide in the presence of light (16.70%) compared with dark conditions (32.64%), confirming the contribution of photocatalysis to contaminant degradation and the potential of these materials for the treatment of cyanide-containing wastewater. | |
