| dc.description.abstractenglish | This study evaluates the mechanical response of marginal granular materials (MGM) manufactured from gravel and sand fractions from the Paviandi and Chicamocha quarries, varying their fines content, plasticity index and dust ratio, in order to evaluate their potential for implementation in low-volume roads. The methodology included the controlled design to replace the fine passing sieve 200 fraction of the quarry and the mechanical characterization through indirect tensile strength, resilient modulus, permanent deformation, and unconfined compressive strength tests. For the MGM obtained from the Paviandi quarry material, the use of the gyratory compactor was validated, applying the locking point criterion with130 gyrations, which reduced volumetric variability, although it induced degradation associated with the limited intrinsic resistance of the material's particles. When measuring cracking tolerance using the CT index, the use of three-dimensional fracture surfaces improved accuracy, while the indirect tensile strenght did not show strong direct correlations with the plasticity index or the fines content. On the other hand, the evaluation of MGM manufactured from Chicamocha quarry material demonstrated that higher FC and PI values increase the moisture demand in compaction. Under cyclic loads, none of the MGM reached the regulatory limit for resilient modulus (70 MPa). In permanent deformation, configurations with a dust ratio of 0.6 maintained elastic stability, while a dust ratio of 0.9 triggered plastic yield. In contrast, unconfined compressive strenght tests evidenced that certain MGM exceed the maximum strength of the regulatory control material (C1M0D6), although they present brittle failures. It is concluded that dynamic performance limits the use of these MGM from the Chicamocha quarry in unbound layers, which is why it is suggested to explore stabilization processes to make their structural application in low-volume road pavements viable. | |
