| dc.description.abstractenglish | Coffee processing generates pulp and coffee wastewater, two residues with great energy potential but which, upon fermenting rapidly, accumulate volatile fatty acids (VFAs) and destabilize anaerobic digestion. To prevent this, this study evaluated the co-digestion of these residues using bovine manure as a stabilizing agent. Using a simplex-lattice mixture design, we analyzed the biochemical methane potential (BMP). Evaluated separately, the coffee wastewater achieved the highest yield (741.73 NL CH₄ kg VS⁻¹), followed by the pulp (457.41) and the manure (342.16). Although statistical models showed an antagonistic effect on total biogas production when mixing the three substrates, they demonstrated that the true advantage of the system is that the manure effectively curbs VFAs. Optimization determined that the ideal mixture is 50% coffee wastewater, 25% pulp, and 25% bovine manure (based on volatile solids). This proportion projected a BMP of 501.25 NL CH₄ kg VS⁻¹ and kept VFAs controlled at 484.72 mg L⁻¹.When testing this combination in a semi-continuous tubular biodigester, the system operated stably, producing 1.4 NL CH₄ per day, with organic matter removals of 55% (VS) and 48% (COD). However, after 96 days of continuous operation, the yield declined due to a new accumulation of VFAs. | |
