| dc.description.abstractenglish | Cosmic rays are extraterrestrial particles whose detection is indirect: upon interacting with the atmosphere they generate secondary cascades recorded by the HAWC (High Altitude Water Cherenkov) Observatory, located at 4,100 m a. s. l. on Sierra Negra, Mexico. Reconstructing the primary particle energy is a complex problem that HAWC addresses with the maximum likelihood (LH) method, which presents precision limitations and bias at the extremes of the energy range. In this work, artificial intelligence algorithms were implemented to estimate this energy. Multilayer perceptrons (MLP), convolutional neural networks (CNN), and boosting algorithms (XGBoost and LightGBM) were trained on CORSIKA simulations from the pass5 and pass4 versions, through a pipeline of preprocessing, variable selection, and hyperparameter optimization. Two final models were built with pass4 data: MP4CE, which incorporates the intrinsic energy estimators from the reconstruction, and MP4SE, which excludes them. MP4CE showed the lowest dispersion and smallest bias for protons and iron nuclei, with a response matrix concentrated along the ideal diagonal. MP4SE also outperformed the LH method, although with greater dispersion at low energies, and both models reached an effective area close to the geometric area of the array. In the $E^{2.6}$-weighted spectrum, MP4SE provided the most consistent behavior, while MP4CE showed a slight overestimation of the flux at high energies. The results confirm the potential of neural networks to improve the energy calibration of the observatory. | |
