dc.descriptionThe fuel cell (FC) ¡s a promissory energy conversión technology to power zero emission vehicles (ZEV) and stationary power sources. It is a clean and efficient technology whose provided power comes from two-electrochemical redox-reactions. Arapid chronological review from 1839 up to the present-day is given. The fuel cell applications, advantages and disadvantages, its basic elements and FC classification are reviewed. It is described the fuel cell system with its functional parts. Finally an economical and technical analysis is made on fuel cell and its the challenges that are facing up in order to get a massive application in the near future.en-US
dc.descriptionLas celdas de combustible, son consideradas el sistema de conversión de energía más promisorio para la generación de electricidad en vehículos y fuentes locales de potencia; es una tecnología limpia y notablemente eficiente. La potencia producida proviene de dos reacciones electroquímicas. En el presente artículo se hace un recorrido cronológico desde el descubrimiento en 1839 hasta su estado actual y aplicaciones. Se dan a conocer las ventajas y desventajas, los componentes básicos de la celda, la clasificación y su estado de investigación. Se describe el sistema de celdas de combustible con sus partes. Finalmente el artículo presenta un análisis tecnoeconómico de las celdas y los retos que debe superar en aras de una aplicación masiva a mediano plazo.   es-ES
