dc.description.abstractenglish | Due to the growing world population and food demand, usage of fertilizers in 2019 was 4 times the amount in 1960. The excessive use of these compounds, rich in nitrate and phosphate, causes eutrophication, a phenomenon that leads to the overgrowth of aquatic algae, which generates hypoxia in water bodies. Among the existing treatments for the removal of these nutrients, adsorption is a method that stands out because of its high removal percentages, economic feasibility and easy to control systems. In the present study, the authors followed the PRISMA protocol to carry out a systematic review of literature, published between 2016 and 2021, about adsorption of nitrate and phosphate from agricultural wastewater. Among the main findings, authors can highlight that: 1) The most used materials have matrices based on carbonaceous, polymeric or metal oxide/hydroxide structures; 2) in some cases, their sources can be inexpensive and have relatively simple synthesis methods; 3) they possess high surface areas and can be impregnated or grafted by metallic and organic active phases to improve their adsorption capacity; 4) the main operating variables are temperature, pH of the medium, initial concentration of adsorbate, competing ions and adsorbent dosage and 5) the most common adsorption mechanisms are the electrostatic interaction of protonated groups on the material surface and anions, and adsorbent-adsorbate chemical interactions based on ligand exchange and chemical bonds. Finally, this work allowed the authors to identify trends, key aspects and future challenges related to the currently used materials for nitrates/phosphates adsorption from agricultural wastewater.
