dc.description.abstractenglish | The growing demand for essential oils (EO) and the variety of biological properties of their compounds have aroused a growing interest among industry and scientific community. Citronella essential oil has shown a strong repellent effect for various types of Aedes mosquitoes. Orange EO is a strong deterrent to fruit fly oviposition. Catalytic transformation of EOs has been reported as a means for EO titration. The essential oils of orange and citronella were obtained by steam distillation from fresh plant material collected at the local juice industry and from that grown in the experimental plots of CENIVAM. The catalytic transformation of the EO was carried out in the Environmental Catalysis group of the University of Antioquia. Batch fractionation, in a rotary axis column, of the EOs was used to validate a model that predicts the behavior of the composition over time. The chemical characterization of the EO, fractions and reaction products were performed by gas chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry (GC/MS) and coupled to a flame ionization detector (GC/FID). The identification of the compounds was carried out based on their linear retention indices, by comparing the mass spectra obtained with those of the databases (Adams, NIST, Wiley) and reference substances. The modeling results showed an R2 of up to 0.96 with a maximum error of 0.015. The model for the fractionation of the EOs from orange, citronella and the reaction product isopulegol, showed a strong correlation between the experimental data and the modeled ones. This relationship and its figures of merit experimentally validate the application of this model to the EO evaluated.
