SUMMARYIn the context of this essay we will give the term "poetry of circumstances" to any epic-lyric work that emerges as a result of the historic eventswich took place at the beginning of the nineteenth century in Hispanic america an Great Colombia. These events led to the spanish colonies definitive independence in america. This said poetry is also known as patriotic poetry. Also, we will attempt to show, as an indisputable and unyielding fact, usingsome examples, that the poetry of circumstances -or the patriotic poetry- played a crucial role for the nation. This role could be analyzed in three distinct ways. It helped to shape the national and cultural identity; also it helped to form the political imagination of the nation state. Finally the poetry had an educational and didactic function wich for more than one century established the formation of the collective conscience and imagination.
