El artículo analiza cómo fue el proceso de percepción que se generó hacía los habitantes del Caribe colombiano entre 1900 y 1950. Demuestra cómo a pesar del papel estratégico que jugó este espacio como punto de conexión de Colombia con el extranjero y sede de los principales puertos, esto no limitó a geógrafos, médicos, abogados y demás escritores generar juicios de valor negativos al momento de estudiar esta región. Se sostiene por tanto, que esta imagen fue construida mediante un análisis determinista de tipo geográfico-racial que generó como resultado un medio hostil y una raza devastada.
The article analize how was the perception produced to the people in the Colombian Caribbean between 1900 and 1950. In despite of the significant role it had as an important connector between Colombia and some other main ports and overseas, this do not avert the geographers, doctors, lawyers and more writers to make negative judgements when studying this region. I maintain that this visualitation was made throught a deterministic analysis of the racial-geographical type that as result, it produced an hostile atmosphere and a devastated race.
