dc.description.abstractenglish | Plastic pollution is a topic of recent interest due to the high resistance to degradation and low recyclability rate of these materials. This problem is evident mainly in food packaging, due to the hygiene and food preservation requirements. In this regard, different plastics are mixed by coextrusion or lamination and, in some cases, metallization with aluminum is additionally performed, obtaining a multicomponent material that is difficult to recycle thanks to the lack in separation technology. The present work aims to recognize the studies carried out in the development of hybrid coatings on plastic substrates as an alternative to the metallization of food packaging, and to identify the advances and possible challenges in this subject, by applying the PRISMA methodology to perform the review and bibliometric analysis. The results exhibit the development of hybrid coatings on bio-based and fossil origin polymers, in order to improve the barrier properties -to a greater extent-, antimicrobial and antioxidant properties of the final material and thus contribute to the good conservation of the state of the food. The advances and hybrid coatings made, are mainly generated through the application of two procedures: sol-gel technology and the incorporation of nanofillers. Finally, the lack of research on the biodegradability or recyclability of these materials, the lack of consideration of the economic aspect, and the difficulty of their industrial scalability, are presented as challenges to face in this field of research.
