dc.description.abstractenglish | This is a descriptive study with transverse analysis. 96 patients diagnosed with Acute Coronary Syndrome at the Emergency Room of the Bucaramanga Hospital between November 2002 and November 2003 were analyzed. Databases and statistical analysis were carried out using Epi-Info 2002. Lipid characteristics showing the most common abnormalities, frequency of glycemia and other risk factors associated to cardiovascular disorders are presented in this paper. The total cholesterol / HDL cholesterol ratio is also described. 54.2% of the patients are between 50 and 69 years old. 85.41 % of the patients come from the urban area. Most patients were males (59,4% of the total sample). 72.9% showed a history of hypertension, followed by a history of cardiac failure, coronary disease and diabetes mellitus. 96.9% had cardiovascular risk factors, being the main ones hypertension, smoking, and overweight. 63.5% of the patients had tryglycerides in amount of 150 mg /dL. 45.8% of the patients had a total cholesterol / HDL ratio greater than five. 22.9% of the patients had a LDL /HDL greater than five. This suggests that the first ratio is closely associated with the occurrence of acute coronary events. Hypercholesterolemia greater than 200 mg /dL, HDL cholesterol less than 40 mg / dL and LDL cholesterol greater than 100 mg / dL were the abnormalities found with the greatest frequency. There were statistically significant differences among the 21 patients that had a Total Cholesterol / HDL greater than five. This figure is consistent with a value of total cholesterol greater than 200 mg / dL. The fifteen patients with the Total cholesterol / HDL ratio less than five showed a total cholesterol value of 200 mg /dL. This suggests that the Total Cholesterol / HDL ratio greater than five is related with the occurrence of Acute Coronary events in a direct manner as compared to only hypercholesterolemia.
