dc.description.abstractenglish | Due to increasing worry because mercury and cyanide pollution in water sources by gold mining, scientifics are looking for environment and friendly alternatives to allow the removal of these pollutans, for this reason, in the present research was selected, adapted and built an light- assisted electrochemical reactor at bench scale; it was evaluated in the process of mercury removal and cyanide oxidation using a standard solution of 206 ppm of Hg (II) and 520 ppm of CN and effluent from gold mining. Initially the range required potential was determinated to achieve mercury reduction and oxidation of cyanide to the model solution. Later the reactor was designed and built his geometry with a coaxial cylindrical anode compartment and separated by an anionic membrane to the cathode compartment, all based on recent history and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) using the COMSOL MultiphysicsTM software. The anode was a cylindrical helix AISI 304 stainless steel coated with N-TiO2, while the cathode consisted of four coaxial mesh stainless steel AISI 304 with an opening 60 holes per inch. The reactor was hydrodynamically characterized, obtaining Km constants mass transfer in both anodic and cathodic compartments. The anode compartment showed a dimensionless correlation Sh = 7,7Re0,32Sc0,33, which shows laminar flow in this compartment. This research demonstrated the need to explore further N-TiO2 coatings on conductive substrates of large surface area, and thus achieve the construction of a light-assisted electrochemical reactor that is efficient, so that in future research, such reactor can be used under sunlight
