ABSTRACT This work develops a reflection on the musical literature written by the Composer Blas Emilio Atehortúa (1943), who has been recognized amongst the great Latin-American composers of our time. Without doubt, his work has encouraged younger composers. His innovative style has brought the attention of musicologists and music interpreters. This is a string reason, to understand that any reflective exercise is more than important for ourself-comprehension as Latin-Americans. Given the exigencies that the analysis of his work is faced up with, this article will only analyse his Cello and Piano Sonata Op. 186 (1995).This article will first give a brief account of his history and thought. Then it will characterize in general manner the sonata, in order to describe, thirdly, the technical and interpretative difficulties it offers to any interpreter. Thereafter the article will be able to give a general musical analysis of the work. KEY WORDS: Atehortúa, violoncello, musical analysis, musical analysis, Latin-American Music.
