dc.description.abstractenglish | Thermoelectric generate an increase in sediment loading by surface runoff. More harmful contaminants derived from these activities include heavy metals. Considering the above, this application project focused on studying the potential use of phytoremediation, using plants Macrophytes. Specifically, determined the capacity that the species Lemna minor for removing hexavalent chromium (Cr 6) and reduce the organic content of synthetic wastewater that resemble current effluent of a thermoelectric processes. Also evaluated the influence that have different values of population density of the Lemna minor on ability to remove chrome and organic matter from the water to be treated and at the same time the interaction of heavy metals - organic matter on the growth of the species. The results of this study were used to a preliminary design of system of phytoremediation in keeping with typical volumes to try Thermoelectric. The factors of greater influence in the process of removal of Cr (VI) were humic acid concentration and the concentration of Cr (VI), reaching a percentage of removal of metal of 52.71% in 6 days and a percentage of removal of COD of 13.60% in 3 days time. For concentration of hexavalent chromium levels evaluated between 0.5 and 2.0 mg/L, is not evidenced a severe toxic effect in the plant presenting a quick adaptation. In terms of the ability of the Lemna minor remove hexavalent chromium, it is concluded that high concentrations of humic acid and low biomass values favours the removal process. The Lemna minor can be used as a simple and effective tool in water decontamination processes with typical toxic levels of Thermoelectrics.
