ESTATUS EPISTEMOLÓGICO DEL PRINCIPIO DE UNIFORMISMO EN GEOLOGÍA, DESDE LA TEORÍA DEL CONOCIMIENTO DEL FILÓSOFO KARL R. POPPER

dc.descriptionDesde su inicio, el Uniformismo2 geológico de Hutton y Lyell se ha considerado una noción inductiva problemática y confusa epistemológicamente hablando. La mayoría de las críticas e intentos de clarificación han resultado vagos y contradictorios, lo que coincide con el hecho de que se hayan formulado también desde un enfoque inductivo. Basado en algunas afirmaciones de sus proponentes, en las ideas del filósofo K. R. Popper respecto a la insostenibilidad lógica de la inducción y en tres casos de estudio, se intenta mostrar que los problemas epistemológicos del Uniformismo surgen precisamente de creerlo una generalización inductiva y de tratar de solucionar sus dificultades desde ese mismo enfoque. Se propone entonces una solución en la que se libera al principio de uniformidad de cualquier rasgo inductivo mostrando, desde Popper, que éste no es más que una conjetura metafísica, una hipótesis de trabajo reducible al postulado de la invariancia de las leyes naturales en el tiempo y el espacio. Desde esta visión, su validez, carácter y estatus epistemológico pueden dejar de ser confusos. En este sentido, el tratamiento epistemológico correcto para el Uniformismo no será el inductivo sino el deductivo.  Palabras Clave: A priori, conjetura, deducción, empírico, epistemología, geología, inducción, metafísico, principio de uniformidad de la naturaleza (PUN), uniformismo.    es-ES
dc.description  Since its inception, the geological uniformitarianism of Hutton and Lyell has been considered an epistemologically problematic and confusing inductive concept. Most of the criticism and attempts at clarification have proved contradictory and vague, because they also have been made from an inductive approach. Based on certain statements of its proponents, on the ideas of the philosopher K. R. Popper about the unsustainability of logical induction, and on three case studies, this paper attempts to show that the epistemological problems arise precisely from taking the uniformitarianism as inductive and trying to solve their problems from this approach. It then proposes a solution which releases the uniformity principle of any inductive features showing, according to Popper, that it is only a metaphysical conjecture, a working hypothesis, reducible to postulate the invariance of natural laws in time and space. From this view, its epistemological status and validity will be confused no more. In this sense, the correct treatment for epistemological uniformity will not be inductive but deductive.
