A partir del seguimiento detallado de las inversiones y actividades del negociante bumangués Bartolomé Rugeles (1860-1938), el presente artículo aborda las múltiples dificultades surgidas para la construcción del ferrocarril que conectaría a Bucaramanga con Puerto Wilches, y al río Magdalena. La perspectiva acogida para ello plantea una necesaria asociación de esta problemática con el proceso general de declive afrontado por la región santandereana en razón de las repercusiones políticas y materiales que debió asumir tras la Guerra de los Mil Días. De modo que, la problemática configurada en torno a esta obra resulta un eje transversal para identificar las repercusiones específicas de dicho decaimiento en la sociedad santandereana de comienzos del siglo XX, desde los más diversos matices.Además de su peculiar inserción en el entorno en el que se desenvolvió todo este proceso, la elección de Bartolomé Rugeles como referencia central para seguirle la pista a la problemática del declive de Santander en el siglo XX se sustenta en la valiosa oportunidad investigativa derivada de la posibilidad de acceder a sus diarios personales. Unos meticulosos registros, acumulados por él entre 1899 y 1938, que hicieron posible conformar el corpus documental complementario requerido para viabilizar el desarrollo del presente artículo.Palabras clave: Ferrocarril, Bartolomé Rugeles, Santander, Puerto Wilches, negociante.
From the detailed monitoring of investments and activities of the bumangués merchant Bartolomé Rugeles (1860-1938) this article discusses the many difficulties encountered in the construction of the railway that would connect Bucaramanga with Puerto Wilches, and the Magdalena River. The prospect assumed for this implies a necessary association of this problem with the general process of decline faced by the Santander region because of the political implications and materials that had to take after the War of the Thousand Days. So, the problem set about this railway is a transversal edge to identify the specific impact of the decline in Santander society of the early twentieth century, from the most diverse shades.In addition to its peculiar insertion on the environment in which this process held, the choice of Bartolomé Rugeles as central reference to analyze the problem of the decline of Santander in the twentieth century is based on the valuable research opportunity of access to his personal journals. Some meticulous records accumulated by him between 1899 and 1938, which made it possible to form the corpus of e complementary documents required for the writing of this article.Key Words: Railway, Bartolomé Rugeles, Santander, Puerto Wilches, merchant.
