| dc.description.abstractenglish | The power cable is one of the most critical and expensive components of an electric submersible pumping (ESP) system, accounting for more than 20% of system failures and nearly 30% of the total equipment cost. This undergraduate thesis proposes the development of a rehabilitation process for ESP cables withdrawn from the well that, while not suitable for direct reuse, retain recoverable electrical and mechanical conditions. To this end, the main electrical, mechanical, and manufacturing-related failures associated with the power cable were identified and classified, establishing technical selection criteria based on operating history, electrical testing (continuity, Megger, Hipot), and physical inspection. Based on this analysis, a structured technical process was designed comprising four work stations: incoming inspection and testing, armor removal, phase cleaning, and armor reinstallation with or without a capillary tube, each including quality-control and traceability checkpoints. In addition, the potential market for this process in Colombia was assessed for the 2025-2030 period, estimating approximately 1,282 wells as candidates for cable replacement and around 8.97 million feet of cable available for rehabilitation. Finally, the carbon footprint of manufacturing a new cable was compared with that of a rehabilitated cable, showing a reduction of nearly 80% in CO2-equivalent emissions per foot of cable. The results show that ESP cable rehabilitation is a technically, economically, and environmentally viable strategy, aligned with circular economy principles in the hydrocarbon industry. | |
