dc.description.abstract	El zanate caribeño (Quiscalus lugubris) se distribuye desde las Antillas menores hasta el norte de Suramérica y ha aumentado su rango de distribución al Caribe Colombiano y el valle de Magdalena. Se conoce muy poco sobre la biología reproductiva de esta especie y en particular de la histología gonadal y su relación con las características externas en aves passeriformes. En el presente trabajo se realiza una descripción de parámetros morfométricos y de morfología externa, además de una descripción detallada a nivel macro y microscópico del tracto reproductivo con lo que se identifica el estado de actividad gonadal y se estima el tamaño a la madurez sexual y otras características de la biología reproductiva en hembras de esta especie. El aparato reproductor femenino de Q. lugubris es asimétrico, constituyéndose solo de ovario y oviducto izquierdo ubicado a nivel ventral del riñón. El ovario en hembras reproductivas posee folículos en diferentes estados de desarrollo. El oviducto se divide en infundíbulo, magnum, istmo, útero, transición útero-vagina y vagina. El epitelio luminal de todo el oviducto muestra células ciliadas y no ciliadas además de abundantes glándulas en la región magnal y uterina; los túbulos de almacén de esperma se encuentran en la transición útero-vagina tanto en hembras reproductivas como en adultas no reproductivas. En la población estudiada, la madurez sexual en hembras de Q. lugubris, se alcanza a los 46,8 g, estas hembras tienen plumaje nuevo, iris color beige y parche de incubación. No se encontraron hembras reproductivas en todo el tiempo de muestreo, en los meses más secos del año fue común encontrar hembras adultas con gónadas en regresión sugiriendo una actividad reproductiva estacional.
dc.description.abstractenglish	The Caribbean grackle (Quiscalus lugubris) is distributed from the Lesser Antilles to the north of South America and has increased its range of distribution to the Colombian Caribbean and the Magdalena Valley. Little is known about the reproductive biology of this species and in particular about gonadal histology and its relation with external characteristics in passerine birds. In the present work, a description of morphometric parameters and external morphology is performed, as well as a detailed description at the macro and microscopic levels of the reproductive tract, thus identifying the gonadal activity status and estimating the size at sexual maturity and other characteristics of the reproductive biology in females of this species. The female reproductive system of Q. lugubris is asymmetric, constituting only of ovary and left oviduct located at the ventral level of the kidney. The ovary in reproductive females has follicles in different stages of development. The oviduct is divided into infundibulum, magnum, isthmus, uterus, transition uterus-vagina and vagina. The luminal epithelium of the whole oviduct shows ciliated and non-ciliated cells in addition to abundant glands in the magnum and uterus region; sperm storages tubules are found at the transition site between the uterus and the vagina in both reproductive and non-reproductive females. In the studied population, the sexual maturity in females of Q. lugubris, is reached at 46.8 g, these females have new plumage, beige iris and brood patch. Reproductive females were not found during the entire year, in the driest months of the year it was common to find adult females with regressed gonads suggesting a seasonal reproductive activity.
