dc.description.abstract	Este trabajo de investigación constituye el primer estudio genético del tiburón ballena (Rhincodon typus) en Colombia, caracterizando su diversidad y estimando su estructura genética poblacional a nivel global mediante el análisis de la región control del ADNmt. A partir de muestras provenientes del Santuario de Fauna y Flora Malpelo (Pacífico Colombiano) y una base de datos global. Se identificó una estructura poblacional significativa que define cuatro unidades poblacionales genéticamente diferenciadas: Atlántico, Índico, Pacífico Occidental y Pacífico Oriental. Los individuos del SFFM fueron determinados como parte del Pacífico Oriental, indicando conectividad con poblaciones de Panamá y México. Los altos valores de diversidad haplotípica y la baja diversidad nucleotídica encontrados sugieren una expansión poblacional reciente. Estos resultados subrayan la importancia del Corredor Marino del Pacífico Este Tropical (CMAR) y la necesidad de estrategias de conservación regionales coordinadas para esta especie en peligro de extinción.
dc.description.abstractenglish	This project constitutes the first genetic study of the whale shark (Rhincodon typus) in Colombia, not only characterizing the genetic structure for the species but also estimating their genetic diversity in a global scale analyzing the Control Region of the mtDNA. From samples collected in Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary (Colombian Pacific) and global data sets. We identified a significative population structure that defined four population units genetically differentiated: Atlantic, Indic, east Pacific and finally West Pacific. Individuals sampled from the MFFS, were determined to be part of the East Pacific group, indicating connectivity with populations from Mexico and Panama. The high haplotypic and nucleotidic diversity values suggest a recent population expansion for the species. The results found in this study highlight the importance of marine corridors like CMAR and the need to create and carry out strategies for the conservation of endangered species on a regional level.
