Abstract
Description
SUMMARYThe ignorant schoolmaster is a teaching method created by the French pedagogue Joseph Jacotot at the beginning of the 19th century, and revisited by the French philosopher Jacques Rancière. It exalts the autodidactic learning capacity, based on will and equality. Even though at the beginning the method was used to learn languages, it rapidly extended to other fields of knowledge. Here, we would like to discuss how philosophy, particularly in Latin America, has received the ignorant schoolmaster method, as well as its most significant contributions to the teaching of philosophy. The article will focus on the study of four of the ignorant schoolteacher's philosophical lectures, developed by Brazilian and Uruguayan pedagogues, whose work the author had the opportunity of translating to French for the Télémaque magazine of the French University of Caen. Keywords: Education; learning methods; education in Latin America; philosophy and education.
