RESUMEN El Sistema Nacional de Acreditación tiene como propósito fortalecer la calidad de la educación superior en Colombia y se presenta como una oportunidad para la autorregulación de los programas universitarios. Consta de tres etapas: evaluación de las condiciones iniciales institucionales, la autoevaluación del programa y la evaluación externa realizada por los pares académicos. En octubre de 1997 la Universidad Industrial de Santander recibió la visita del Consejo Nacional de Acreditación, el cual consideró que la institución cumplía con las condiciones iniciales para realizar la autoevaluación de los programas; así Fisioterapia emprendió el proceso desde 1998 y recibió la visita de los pares externos en el mes de octubre del año anterior. De acuerdo con la resolución 1031 del 5 de mayo del 2000, el Ministerio de Educación aprobó la acreditación del programa durante cuatro años. En este artículo se presenta la experiencia del proceso, así como el impacto que para la profesión y la academia tiene la acreditación, de acuerdo con las reflexiones del programa. ABSTRACT The purpose of the National Acreditation System ¡s to improve the quality of higher education, at the same time offers the academic programs an opportunity for autoregulation. The accreditation process has three parts; first the evaluation of the institution as a whole. Second the autoevaluation of the academic program and third the external evaluation by academic peers. In October of 1997 the Universidad Industrial de Santander was visited by the members of the National Accreditation Committee, which considered that the university met the initial requirements to initiate the autoevaluation of their academic programs. The physical therapy program started the process in February of 1998 and received the external evaluation visit by academic peers in October of 1999. According to the resolution of the Ministry of Education of May of 2000 the Physical Therapy program received the accreditation for four years. The objective of this article is to present the experience of the process as well as the impact that the accreditation has on the academic and professional aspects of the physical therapy profession.
