dc.description.abstractenglish | Motorcyclists as vulnerable traffic customers are the ones who have a great risk of suffering fatal injuries or non-fatal ones per kilometer compared with people who drive another kind of motor vehicle. The general objective of this research was to determine the factors associated with the severity of the non-fatal trauma in parties, caused by riding motorcycles in the Metropolitan area of Bucaramanga. Materials and Methods. This is a cross-sectional study in which 570 clinic stories were analyzed consecutively of motorcyclists injured by trauma caused by riding motorcycles in the Metropolitan area of Bucaramanga during the period between January 1, 2008 and October 23, 2010. The severity variable of the trauma was measured using the New Injury Severity Score ( NISS ) and a multi-varied analysis was conducted based on logistic regression and statistics package Stata 11. Outcome. 570 non-fatal injuries were analyzed corresponding to 80% motorcyclists and 20% passengers. The 80% of suffered slight trauma ( NISS ) and 20% ( NISS > 3);suffered moderate to severe trauma, associated with driving under the influence of alcohol OR 3,6 (IC95% 1,4-9,5,p o,o1 ), being over 35 years old OR 1.8 ( IC 95%, 1,1 -3,3, p=0,05 ) and being single OR 1.8 ( IC95% 1,1-2,9,p=0,02 ). Comments. Motorcyclists, as a vulnerable population exposed to the risk of suffering fatal and non-fatal injuries should be included in programs to prevent and control injuries caused by traffic accidents. Similarly, public health models should be followed, such as those based on the Haddon matrix to facilitate the comprehensive, systemic approach suggested by the World Health Organization.
