dc.description.abstractenglish | This experimental research project studies the mechanical behavior of four marginal granular materials (MGMs) with plasticity indices (PI) of 8%, 12%, and 15% and fines content of 21% and 24%. The mechanical response of these materials was assessed through dynamic triaxial testing for the possible use of these materials as granular subbase layers in low-volume traffic roads. These MGMs are studied to determine the influence of the PI and fines content on the mechanical behavior of compacted specimens. Specimen compaction was performed (using the gyratory compactor) after mixing fractions of gravel, sand, and fines, with the optimum moisture content, in the proportions defined by the design gradation. On the other hand, the effect of a drying trajectory (moisture content two percentage points below the optimum moisture content) on the mechanical response of these specimens was studied. Results suggest that the resilient modulus measured in the initial condition (after compaction) compared to the dry state was lower. These results suggest that one of the variables that most influences the mechanical behavior of granular materials is the moisture content, which is related to the suction developed in these materials. For the same particle size and PI, a slight variation in the fines content did not represent significant changes in the mechanical response of the MGMs evaluated at optimum moisture content.
