dc.description.abstractenglishMethods: Population: children and adolescents <16 years with cancer who attended the pediatric oncology ward in Bucaramanga at the Hospital Universitario de Santander, Hospital Universitario Ramón González Valencia and the private clinic from February 1993 to February 2006. Statistical analysis: Univariate analysis, summary measures as relative frequency, central tendency and variability, and bivariate analysis for describing the distribution of main clinical variables according to age, sex and diagnostic time. Results: 818 patients were seen, the mean age was 5.6 ±3.7 years. 57.70% were boys and 60.88% came from urban area. 26.77% (219) children had familiar history of neoplastic disease. 0.24% had personal or familiar antecedents of a genetic syndrome, Down syndrome (43.48%), harelip and cleft palate (6.52%) and the 50% left had diverse genetic alterations. Two kids with lymphoma had HIV infection and immunodeficiency, 0,12% had pre malignant syndrome as myelodysplastic syndrome. 3.18% had history of contact with toxic substances. According to the diagnosis, leukemia and lymphomas (no Hodgkin lymphoma and Hodgkin disease) were the most frequent and they appeared in 471 patients followed by tumors of the central nervous system (121). Conclusion: This study provides information about the epidemiological behavior of cancer in our environment and it permit to trace investigation lines based on the cases described.ƒ *
