dc.description.abstractenglish | This article presents an experimental study on the mechanical response of marginal granular materials (MGM) stabilized with anionic nano-modified asphaltic emulsion - ENM (also called Nano Modified Emulsion - NME). In this process, materials with a nominal maximum size of 4.76 mm and a percentage of fines of 18% (with a plasticity index of 8% for MGM-1 and 15% for MGM-3) were examined. Based on these data, the material was characterized using the California Bearing Ratio (CBR) test on specimens of 150 mm in diameter and 130 mm in height, with CBR values of 29% for MGM-1 and 31% for MGM-3. Simultaneously, a compaction curve was performed with specimens of 100 mm diameter and 150 mm height for MGM-1 Sands and MGM-3 Sands based on the "locking point" criterion, which allowed determining an optimum compaction moisture of 13.7% and 13.6%, with a dry unit weight of 18.77 kN/m3 and 18.50 kN/m3, respectively. In addition, mineralogical analysis of the MGMs was carried out by X-ray diffraction (XRD) to design the NME according to the predominant minerals in the coarse and fine fractions of the MGMs. When designing the NME for MGM-1, the mechanical response was evaluated for two surfactants with different degrees of purity, one of commercial grade and the other of analytical grade. Thus, the strength provided by the nano-modified particles in the NME was also evaluated. On the other hand, for MGM-3, the NME design was not fabricated due to its complex mineralogical composition since it required a more sophisticated technology that is out of the work scope. On the other hand, the mechanical response of MGM-1 was evaluated by means of unconfined compression and indirect tensile tests in 50 mm diameter and 100 mm height specimens, with different percentages of NME, from which an optimum emulsion percentage of 1.5% was obtained in both surfactant grades, indicating that the commercial grade surfactant has a better mechanical response. Finally, a test was performed in the dynamic triaxial equipment with specimens of 150 mm diameter and 200 mm height for the commercial-grade surfactant with the optimum NME content, from which a mean resilient modulus of 66.7 MPa was obtained in the nano-modified mixture and a resilient modulus of 56.3 MPa for the original emulsion.
