dc.description.abstractIdealmente, el programa de las bibliotecas aldeanas del gobierno liberal de López Pumarejo fue pensado para servir a la instrucción de las “masas populares”. A esa iniciativa la movía el interés económico de tecnificar la mano de obra para aumentar la productividad agraria e industrial y así aportar a la modernización del país. Al revisar los escritos de ese momento histórico se identifica que la difusión cultural privilegiaba el interés económico, pero también el propósito de acercar el libro a las poblaciones alejadas de los centros de poder, en intentos por buscar un nuevo público lector de adultos “impreparados”. En este artículo se analiza la correspondencia entre los funcionarios encargados de la política desde Biblioteca Nacional y los encargados de las bibliotecas creadas en los municipios de Santander en el período 1935-1940 y a partir de ese análisis se plantea la hipótesis de que la política cultural aportó más al objetivo implícito de una ampliación del control estatal que a la creación de una red de bibliotecas de carácter “popular”, aunque en perspectiva puede verse como antecedente de las bibliotecas públicas actuales.
dc.description.abstractenglishIdeally, the Bibliotecas Aldeanas program of the liberal López Pumarejo government was designed to serve the instruction of the "popular masses." This initiative was driven by the economic interest in making the workforce more technical to increase agricultural and industrial productivity and thus contribute to the modernization of the country. When reviewing the writings of that historical moment, it is identified that cultural diffusion privileged the economic interest, but also the purpose of bringing the book closer to populations far from the centers of power, in attempts to find a new reading public of "unprepared" adults.. This article analyzes the correspondence between the officials in charge of politics from the National Library and those in charge of the libraries created in the municipalities of Santander in the period 1935-1940 and from this analysis the hypothesis is proposed that cultural policy contributed more to the implicit objective of an expansion of state control than to the creation of a network of "popular" libraries, although in perspective it can be seen as an antecedent of current public libraries.
