dc.description.abstractLa incidencia de cáncer de cuello uterino en la población colombiana ha ido en aumento a pesar de los últimos descubrimientos científicos para el control y tratamiento de la misma. Una de las razones principales del desarrollo de este proyecto es contribuir al control y detección temprana de esta enfermedad. Los cánceres cervicouterinos invasores de células escamosas vienen precedidos por una larga fase de enfermedades preinvasoras, denominadas colectivamente Neoplasia Intraepitelial cervical (NIC). La NIC se clasifica en grados 1, 2 y 3 según la proporción del espesor epitelial que presenta células maduras y diferenciadas. La NIC puede detectarse por examen microscópico de las células cervicales en un frotis teñido por la técnica de Papanicolaou. En estas preparaciones citológicas, se evalúan los cambios de cada célula para el diagnóstico y la clasificación de NIC. En cambio, el examen histológico de los tejidos permite examinar otras características. Evaluar citológicamente la NIC basándose en los cambios nucleares y citoplasmáticos suele ser muy difícil. Para ello el Grupo de Investigación de Ingeniería Biomédica (GIIB) con el apoyo conjunto del Departamento de Patología de la Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS), propone una serie de investigaciones basadas en el desarrollo de software por medio del tratamiento digital de imágenes, para ayudar a la ciencia de la medicina a la identificación oportuna de lesiones preneoplásicas y neoplásicas del cuello uterino, dentro de las que se encuentra Neoplasia Intraepitelial Cervical (NICII). En base a esta necesidad ha sido desarrollada la herramienta denominada DIAGNOSIS NICII, la cual fue diseñada e implementada en MATLAB 7.1 bajo un Proceso Unificado (RUP), empleando técnicas del tratamiento digital de imágenes como transformaciones de color, morfología matemática, métodos de umbralización, descriptores de contorno, una red neuronal y una base de datos implementada en MYSQL donde se almacenará toda la información clínica y los resultados de los análisis.
dc.description.abstractenglishThe incidence of uterine neck cancer in the Colombian population has gone in increase even though of the last scientific discoveries to control and treat it. One of the main reasons to develop this project is to contribute to the early control and detection of this illness. The scamous cells’ cervical uterine invaders are preceded from a long phase of pre-invader illnesses, called collectively Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia (CIN). The CIN is classified in 1,2 and 3 grades, according to the proportion of the epithelial thickness that presents mature and differentiated cells. The CIN can detect by microscopic exam of the cervical cells in a stained smear by the Papanicolaou technique. In this cytological preparations, it is evaluated the changes of each cell for the diagnostic and classification of CIN. Instead, the histological exam of tissues allows examining other characteristics. To evaluate cytologically the CIN based on the nuclear y cytoplasm changes uses to be very difficult. For that the Biomedic Engineering Investigation Group (BEIG) with the support of the Pathologic Department of the Industrial University of Santander (IUS), proposes several investigations based on the software development through the digital image treatment, to help medicine science in the timely identification of pre-neoplasic injuries and uterine neck neoplasic, between the ones that CIN II is found. Based on this need has been developed a toll called DIAGNOSIS NIC II, which was designed and implemented in MATLAB 7.1 under and Unified Process (RUP), using techniques of digital images treatment as color transformation, mathematic morphologic, thresholding of methods, contour descriptors, a neuronal network and a data base implemented in MYSQL where all clinic information and the results of analysis are stored. It is recommended the coupling of this software with others that uses diagnostics of the same area in different injuries, some additional tests with a higher level of images for a better training of the neuronal network.
