Madurez sexual de hembras de potamotrygon magdalenae (elasmobranchii: potamotrygonidae) de la ciénaga de Paredes (Santander, Colombia)

dc.description.abstractA partir de observaciones microscópicas y macroscópicas y de análisis de regresión, se establecieron seis estados de madurez sexual y se estimaron parámetros reproductivos de 49 hembras de Potamotrygon magdalenae colectadas en la ciénaga de Paredes, Santander, Colombia. En las hembras inmaduras, no se distinguen los ovarios, y la glándula oviducal y el útero son ligeramente más ensanchados que el oviducto anterior. En las hembras en maduración, son visibles los folículos hialinos sobre el órgano epigonal, la glándula oviducal y el útero se agrandan y se presentan en forma de barril. En las hembras maduras pre-gestantes, los folículos yemados son de varios tamaños y presentan un epitelio folicular de células cilíndricas y globosas; la glándula oviducal presenta dos zonas que se diferencian en la forma de las lamelas y en el patrón de secreción de los mucopolisacáridos. En las hembras preñadas, post-parto y en regeneración, se observan cuerpos lúteos y folículos atrésicos; además,en las primeras, los trofonemas uterinos están conformados por criptas secretoras de mucopolisacáridos neutros y lípidos, intercaladas con capilares. Durante todo el desarrollo, el ovario derecho es más reducido que el izquierdo, desarrolla pocos y pequeños folículos yemados, y puede presentar cuerpos lúteos. Los órganos reproductivos del lado izquierdo fueron significativamente de mayor tamaño que los del lado derecho. La talla mediana de madurez fue de 14.4 cm de ancho de disco (AD) y la de preñez de 17.8 cm AD. La hembra madura más pequeña midió 13.6 cm AD (52.8 % del AD máximo) y la hembra inmadura más grande 17.8 cm AD. La fecundidad uterina promedio fue de 2.9 crías y se observó una relación positiva entre la talla materna y el número de embriones. Este estudio sugiere que la estrategia reproductiva de P. magdalenae consiste de baja fecundidad, madurez sexual a tallas pequeñas y, probablemente, ciclo reproductivo continuo.
dc.description.abstractenglishFrom microscopic and macroscopic observations and regression analysis, the maturity stages and the reproductive parameters of 49 female Potamotrygon magdalenae collected in the Paredes floodplain, Santander, Colombia, were established and estimated. In inmature female, the ovaries are indistinguishable, and the oviducal gland and the uterus are slightly wider than the anterior oviduct. In maturing female, the hyaline follicles are visible on the epigonal organ; the oviducal gland and the uterus are enlarged and appear in barrel form. In pregestant female, the yolk follicles show variety in size and exhibit a follicular epithelium composed of cylindrical and globed-shaped cells; the oviducal gland has two zones that differ in the shape of the lamellae and the pattern of mucopolysaccharides secretion. In pregnant, postpartum and regenerating females, the corpora lutea and atretic follicles are evident; moreover, in pregnant females, the uterine trophonemata are comprised of neutral mucopolysaccharides and lipid- secreting crypts, which appear alternating with capillaries. During development, the right ovary is smaller than the left, it develops few and small yolk-follicles and may have corpora lutea. The reproductive organs on the left side were significantly larger than those on the right side. The median maturity size was 14.4 cm of disc width (WD) and the median pregnancy size was 17.8 cm. The smallest mature female measured 13.6 cm WD (52.8% of maximum WD) and the largest immature female measured 17.8 cm WD. The mean uterine fecundity was 2.9 embryos and a positive relationship between the maternal size and the number of embryos was observed. This study suggests that the reproductive strategy of P. magdalenae consists of low fecundity, sexual maturity at small sizes and probably a continuous reproductive cycle.
