The first step in the development of this project was a study of the different types of drillingunits offshore, analyzing its conditions of operation and the equipment that they are made of. Meteorological and oceanographic conditions from the Bahia prospect were studied. Themaximum, minimum and average values as well as wind directions, waves, precipitations, tidal currents, cloudiness, sunshine, temperature and tropical storm occurrence wereidentified and recorded. Based on our data, the most favorable seasons during the year forexploration activities were suggested. Working water depths in the drilling area wereidentified. In areas to be drilled the water depth was established based on already perforatedwells. It was determined that the factors with the most importance in offshore drilling unit selectionare: water depth, climate factors, depth to be drilled, unit working areas, availability andeconomic factors. Selection of the drilling unit in the objective area was accomplished by taking intoconsideration the following two cases. First, case A with a water depth of 2.000 feet .Second, case B with a water depth of 6.500 feet. It was concluded for cases A and B that themost viable drilling unit is a semi-submersible third generation unit with a conventionalanchoring and a drilling ship with dynamic positioning system.
