dc.description.abstractEl presente trabajo busca aportar a la historia regional de San Gil un tema social que no ha sido manejado hasta el momento, se trata de la dote matrimonial, una práctica que consistía en dotar a las hijas para el matrimonio con un conjunto de bienes muebles e inmuebles. Específicamente, los pariente otorgaban dotes a sus hijas con el fin de ayudar a sobre llevar las cargas del nuevo matrimonio, y de que junto al esposo hicieran una nueva vida independiente de los padres. En este sentido la dote fue importante para ambos conyugues. De otra parte, para el esposo la dote fue esencial al ser el caudal que le permitiría surgir económicamente con los bienes de producción tales como tierra, ganado, y dinero metálico principalmente. Para las mujeres la dote se convirtió en el caudal que les ayudó a sostenerse en estado de viudez o en caso de que el matrimonio se disolviera. Del mismo modo, este trabajo pretende explicar el sentido que tuvo en la villa de San Gil la dote, pues se constituía como un conjunto de bienes que proveía a los cónyuges prestigio social o simplemente una contribución con el fin de ayudar con las cargas del matrimonio. Por último, se muestra la participación de algunos actores sociales involucrados en las dotes, aquellos otorgantes y miembros de las elites locales que por medio de las dotes realizaron sus mejores alianzas matrimoniales y, de diferentes maneras, consiguieron beneficiarse de ellas. Así pues, esta investigación es una aproximación al sistema de la dote matrimonial en la villa de San Gil durante el periodo 1694-1771.
dc.description.abstractenglishSpecifically, the parents bestowed the dowry to their daughters with the purpose of helping the new married couple overcome the initial burdens of marital life. So, the man and wife could make an independent life away from their parents. In this sense, the dowry was important for both spouses. Furthermore, for the husband the dowry was essential due to the fact it constituted a patrimony that would let him emerge economically with household goods, such as land, cattle, and mainly cash. For women the dowry became the heritage that helped them to support their expenses if they widowed, or in case the married were dissolved. In the same vein, this work tries to explain the meaning that dowry had at La Villa de San Gil; due to the fact that it consisted of a set of goods that supplied the new family social status or merely a contribution that lighten marriage burdens. Finally, it is shown the involvement in dowry of certain social actors; those grantors and members of the local elite who, through dowry, made their best marriage covenants and, in a variety of ways, took advantage of them. Hence, this research approximates to the dowry system at La Villa de San Gil in the period 1694-1771.
