dc.description.abstractEste estudio caracterizó tafonómicamente el horizonte fosilífero de Los Corros (Eoceno tardío, Formación Esmeraldas, Cuenca del Valle Medio del Magdalena, VMM) con el fin de reconstruir su ambiente deposicional. Se colectaron 27 muestras en la sección de la quebrada San Silvestre (Santander) a lo largo de 13 Niveles de referencia (NRE), y definiendo con ellas siete tafofacies (A-G) a partir de parámetros de fragmentación, deformación, corrasión, orientación y empaquetamiento de bioclastos. Estas tafofacies en conjunto con análisis petrográficos y la evaluación del contenido de carbono orgánico total, se agruparon en tres asociaciones faciales (Af1-Af3), las cuales reflejan una transición ambiental, con variaciones en las condiciones de oxigenación de fondo, desde sistemas continentales de baja energía hasta barras intermareales influenciadas por tormentas. La Af1, ubicada en el segmento inferior de la sección, representa un sistema continental con enterramiento rápido y baja energía, la Af2, que representa el segmento medio a superior, muestra un estuario salobre con alta productividad con energía variable, y la Af3 (10,74-15,6 m) indica eventos puntuales de mayor energía (tormentitas) en ambientes marginales marinos. Dichas interpretaciones, coinciden con interpretaciones previas basadas en el contenido fósil y la proxies geoquímicos para la misma sección, y estudios regionales del Eoceno en el VMM. De acuerdo a los análisis petrográficos, el material estudiado sugeriría condiciones diagenéticas de eogénesis y las etapas iniciales de la mesogénesis, Finalmente, se identificó la continuidad lateral del horizonte en afloramientos previamente mencionados por otros autores hacia el noreste del Sinclinal de Nuevo Mundo, y se buscó evaluar su extensión al subsuelo mediante registros de pozos. Los resultados fortalecen la interpretación paleoambiental de la Formación Esmeraldas y constituyen una base robusta para futuras investigaciones tafonómicas y estratigráficas en el Eoceno del VMM.
dc.description.abstractenglishThis study characterized the taphonomy of the Los Corros fossiliferous horizon (late Eocene, Esmeraldas Formation, Middle Magdalena Valley Basin, MMV) to reconstruct its depositional environment. Twenty-seven samples were collected from the San Silvestre creek section (Santander) across 13 reference levels (NRE), defining seven taphofacies (A-G) based on parameters such as fragmentation, deformation, corrasion, orientation, and bioclast packing. These taphofacies, combined with petrographic and the evaluation of the total organic carbon content, were grouped into three facial associations (Af1-Af3), reflecting an environmental transition from low-energy continental systems, with bottom water oxygenation changes, to storm-influenced intertidal bars. Af1, located at the lower segment of the section, represents a rapid-burial, low-energy continental system; Af2, which comprises the middle and upper segment, a brackish estuary with variable energy and high productivity; while Af3 (10,74-15,6 m) indicates scattered high energy events (tempestites) in marginal marine environments. These inferences coincided with previous interpretations in the section, based on the fossil content and geochemical proxies, as well as regional studies in the Eocene of the MMV. According to the petrographic analyses, the studied material in the section suggests diagenetic conditions related to eogenesis and the initial stages of mesogenesis. Finally, lateral continuity of the horizon was confirmed in outcrops previously described other authors at the northeast part of the Nuevo Mundo Syncline, and to evaluate its subsurface extension was explored using well logs. The results strengthen the paleoenvironmental interpretation of the Esmeraldas Formation and provide a robust foundation for future taphonomic and stratigraphic research in the Eocene of the MMV.
