dc.description.abstract	La palma de lata es una palma perenne que se encuentra en clima tropical, pertenece a la especie Bactris guineensis (Guinea bactris) ocupando un escalafón dentro de la variedad de especies del género Bactris (Bactris palm) reconocidas en América (Centro, Suramérica y el Caribe). En América, existen cerca de doscientos cuarenta (240) especies del género bactris y en Colombia predominan las siguientes: bactris guineensis, bactris major, bactris gasipaes (Palma de pejibaye o Chontaduro), entre otras; cuyas diferencias radica en la variación física y organográfica de los tallos, espinas, hojas y frutos. El tallo (culmo) de la palma de lata posee un recurso maderable que es aprovechable y ha participado en la construcción del patrimonio nacional, combinado junto a otros materiales naturales y técnicas constructivas autóctonas utilizadas en las regiones en donde abunda y es difícil la influencia de la comercialización de productos constructivos industrializados. Además de ser bien conocida su intervención cultural, la palma de lata aún mantiene vivos algunos oficios que se han derivado de sus cualidades, tal como la fabricación de artesanías, instrumentos musicales y herramientas de trabajo para los pescadores locales. Aunque la lata ha tenido una trayectoria discretamente destacable, los botánicos se han encargado de estudiar y clasificar su jerarquía taxonómica, sin embargo no había sido reconocida hasta ahora su capacidad estructural. Por tanto, la investigación y el reconocimiento formal que se ha elaborado al respecto, pretende retomar la importancia de la palma de lata en la zona donde prospera, cualificar y cuantificar valores aproximados de las propiedades físicas y mecánicas, sumando así datos a los ya existentes. Estos datos son de interés para un proyectista que desea conocer información puntual acerca de un material alternativo que pretenda utilizar en una aplicación requerida y factible con este material.
dc.description.abstractenglish	The ﬁpalma de lata is a perennial palm that is found in tropical climate, it belongs to the species Bactris guineensis (Guinea bactris) occupying a ladder within the range of species of the Bactris genus (Bactris palm) recognized in America (Central America, South America and the Caribbean). In America, there exist about two hundred forty (240) species of the Bactris genus and in Colombia the following type dominates: Bactris guineensis, Bactris major, Bactris gasipaes (Palma de pejibaye or Chontaduro), among others, whose differences lies in the in physical difference and organic differences of the stems, thorns, leaves and fruit. The stem (culm) from the ﬁpalma de lata has a resource of timber that is profitable and has participated in the construction of the national heritage, combined with other natural materials and indigenous construction techniques used in regions where such tree is abundant and it is difficult to influence the marketing of industrial construction products. In addition to being well known for its cultural intervention, the ﬁpalma de lata still maintains alive a few trades that have been derived from its qualities, such as the manufacture of handcrafts, musical instruments and work tools for local fishermen. Although the ﬁpalma de lata has had a discretely remarkable journey, botanists have been studying and classifying its taxonomic hierarchy, however its structural capacity had not been recognized until recently. Therefore, the investigation and formal recognition that has been developed in regards to the ﬁpalma de lata, aims to retake its importance in the neighborhood where it prospers, to qualify and quantify approximate values of its physical and mechanical properties, to add to existing data. This data is of interest to a designer who wants to know detailed information about an alternative material that he or she intends to use in a required application and feasible with this material.
