dc.description.abstractenglish | This graduation project studies and analyzes the behavior, in terms of stresses and deformations, of vehicular tunnel construction within a rock mass with a lithological composition of shale, a material that features critical conditions in terms of geology and resistance. A detailed analysis of the representative and typical characteristics of the rock material, using reference material and software modeling, was used for the development of this investigation. The geological information and sampling was collected at the study site in order to depict the actual rock conditions. All field samples and information were analyzed and processed via Dips V6.0 software. Mechanical properties were derived from lab results and from the field observations, which were analyzed with the RocData v5.0 software. A model of the cross sectional area of the tunnel and the rock mass was subsequently created using the finite element software Phase v8.0, using the geological and mechanical properties previously determined. Finally, the behavior of the rock mass was analyzed throughout the different stages of excavation, and the results compared at different layers within the rock mass, with the goal of acquiring the information needed to arrive at correct conclusions in terms of rock stabilization. As seen in this article, it was determined that the cover that provides the best conditions for this type of rock is a system combining bolts, reinforced concrete and metal arches.
