dc.description.abstractEsta investigación examina la relación entre los procesos de modernización y salubridad en Colombia, centrándose en el Departamento de Caldas durante la primera mitad del siglo XX. El estudio analiza la efectividad de las políticas salubres implementadas por el Estado y el cuerpo médico para enfrentar los problemas de salud más graves en la región, contextualizando geográfica, económica y políticamente el territorio. A través de un enfoque interdisciplinario que combina historia social, demografía y análisis de políticas públicas, se exploran las transformaciones demográficas, las enfermedades endémicas y epidémicas, y los discursos políticos en torno a la salud. La investigación también evalúa las estrategias presupuestales y las intervenciones institucionales, destacando el papel de la Iglesia católica y el Estado en la administración de la salud. El trabajo contribuye a llenar vacíos historiográficos en regiones no centrales de Colombia y ofrece una perspectiva novedosa sobre la interacción entre discurso médico, prácticas estatales y condiciones materiales de la población. Los hallazgos permiten comprender cómo la bonanza cafetera influyó en las políticas de salud y cómo estas se articularon con los proyectos modernizadores del país.
dc.description.abstractenglishThis research examines the relationship between modernization processes and public health in Colombia, focusing on the Department of Caldas during the first half of the 20th century. The study analyzes the effectiveness of public health policies implemented by the State and the medical community to address the region’s most serious health issues, while contextualizing the territory geographically, economically, and politically. Through an interdisciplinary approach that combines social history, demography, and public policy analysis, it explores demographic transformations, endemic and epidemic diseases, and political discourses surrounding health. The research also evaluates budgetary strategies and institutional interventions, highlighting the roles of the Catholic Church and the State in the administration of healthcare. This work helps fill historiographical gaps in non-central regions of Colombia and offers a novel perspective on the interaction between medical discourse, state practices, and the material conditions of the population. The findings shed light on how the coffee boom influenced health policies and how these were aligned with the country's modernization projects.
