dc.description.abstractenglish | Pollution due to the amount of plastic that is currently produced is one of the biggest problems worldwide. Due to that, studies have been launched to find alternatives that meet the need for these plastics. One of the most used options is polylactic acid (PLA), which is a thermoplastic biopolymer that allows to be mixed with other materials such as natural fibers or reinforcing fibers. For this project, three types of filaments were obtained, pure extruded PLA, pure commercial PLA for 3D printing and PLA with cotton fiber as reinforcing. With these filaments, were made by 3D printing test coupons of pure extruded PLA, pure commercial PLA and PLA with cotton reinforcing in percentages of 13%, 27% and 40% additional to the initial mass of the test coupons. Subsequently, test coupons were tensile tested according to ASTM D-3822 standard for pure filaments and according to ASTM D-638-14 standard for test coupons produced by additive manufacturing, in order to obtain mechanical characterization for those materials and to evaluate the influence of the reinforcing fibers (cotton) in the final mechanical properties. After the results were analyzed, it was shown that the filaments of composite material decreased the tensile properties, while, in the test coupons, the addition of cotton as reinforcing increased the tensile properties up to additional 10% compared with the unreinforced material.
