dc.description.abstractLa obra filosófica de Emmanuel Levinas puede ser presentada como el esfuerzo de comprender y describir el encuentro con una alteridad irreductible, absolutamente trascendente. Pensar en el otro como propuesta es pensar de otro modo que del modo de pensar establecido. El modo de pensar establecido es totalitario por cuanto pretende delimitar todo lo que hay y poseerle. Totalizar es fijar las condiciones para que algo sea de un solo modo y no de modo diferente. La negación del otro en sus múltiples formas es consecuencia del imperio del pensamiento totalitario. El pensamiento totalitario no reconoce al otro, lo niega. El pensamiento totalitario lleva consigo la negación, exclusión o eliminación de todo lo que se pone en el plano de la diferencia. El que se revela diferente, se pone por fuera de la totalidad y por su excedencia es el otro ser humano. La relación con el absolutamente Otro no se deja pensar, a juicio de nuestro filósofo, en la tradicional forma de relación sujeto-objeto y por tanto escapa del alcance del pensamiento totalitario. Pensar en el Otro es pensar en el otro ser humano. Ese Otro como una existencia irreductible que se salta el horizonte de la totalidad, y que por su trascendencia permanece impensado, plantea la necesidad de elaborar nuevas categorías que faciliten su reconocimiento y permanecer irreductible; esto es a lo que le apuesta la filosofía de la alteridad. En la relación con el Otro, este se presenta como alguien que tiene rostro y que a través de ese rostro realiza su epifanía, goza de una identidad propia y pide de la mismidad una actitud responsable abierta a la acogida y a la tolerancia.
dc.description.abstractenglishThe philosophical work of Emmanuel Levinas can be presented as the effort to understand and describe the encounter with an irreducible alterity, absolutely transcendent. To think of the other as a proposal is to think otherwise than the established way of thinking. The established way of thinking is totalitarian in that it seeks to delimit all that there is and possess it. Totalize is to set the conditions so that something is in one way and not in a different way. The negation of the other in its multiple forms is a consequence of the empire of totalitarian thought. The totalitarian thought does not recognize the other, it denies it. Totalitarian thought carries with it the denial, exclusion or elimination of everything that is placed on the plane of difference. The one who reveals himself differently, puts himself outside the totality and by his leave of absence is the other human being. The relationship with the absolutely Other is not allowed to think, in the opinion of our philosopher, in the traditional form of subject-object relationship and therefore escapes the reach of totalitarian thought. To think of the Other is to think of the other human being. That Other as an irreducible existence that skips the horizon of the whole, and that by its transcendence remains unthinkable, raises the need to elaborate new categories that facilitate its recognition and remain irreducible; this is what the philosophy of alterity bets on him. In the relationship with the Other, it is presented as someone who has a face and through that face realizes his epiphany, enjoys an identity of his own and calls for a responsible attitude open to welcome and tolerance.
