dc.description.abstractOBJETIVO: Determinar el estado nutricional de los pacientes hospitalizados en el Departamento de Medicina Interna del Hospital Universitario de Santander. DISEÑO: Estudio observacional descriptivo con recolección prospectiva de la información. LUGAR: Departamento de Medicina interna, Hospital Universitario de Santander. Bucaramanga, Colombia. POBLACION: Pacientes hospitalizados en el Departamento de Medicina Interna del Hospital Universitario de Santander, entre septiembre del 2005 y junio 2006. METODOLOGIA: Se obtuvieron datos de los pacientes hospitalizados, mediante la revisión de historias en el formato diseñado para el estudio, donde figuran las variables y características a medir. Los datos recolectados fueron almacenados en formato de Microsoft Excel y analizados usando el software STATA 9.0. 10 RESULTADOS: Se recolectaron datos de 300 pacientes. La población tenía un promedio de edad de 46.81 años, sin diferencias en el género. El 47.6% de los pacientes disminuyeron de peso en las últimas 2 semanas y presentaban cambios en la dieta el 35.3%, siendo insuficiente en el 51.4%. El promedio de estancia fue de 13.3 días. El 8.3% fallecieron, mas frecuentemente en el grupo de enfermedades infecciosas (32%). El 68.3% de los pacientes presentaban riesgo o estaban desnutridos. CONCLUSIONES: La gran mayoría de los se encontraban desnutridos o en riesgo de estarlo, hallándose en los pacientes a los cuales se les tomaron niveles de albúmina y hemoglobina bajas cifras. Los diagnósticos más frecuentes de hospitalización fueron de causa infecciosa, igualmente los de mayor mortalidad. La estancia hospitalaria mayor a 15 días se presentó en pacientes desnutridos o en riesgo con niveles de hemoglobina y albúmina bajos.

Bucaramanga, Colombia Population: Hospitalized patients from Internal Medicine Department of Hospital Universitario de Santander, from September 2005 to June 2006. Methodology: data was obtained from Hospitalized patients through the review of Medical histories from the form designed for the study, which showed the variables and characteristics to be measured. The collected data was stored in Microsoft Excel and analyzed using STATA 9.0 software. 12 Results: data was collected from 300 patients. The population had an age average of 46.81 years old, regardless of the gender. 47.6% of patients lost weight in the last 2 weeks and showed changes in the diet. The average of hospitalization was 13.3 days. The 8.3% passed away, more frequently in the group of infectious diseases (32%). 68.3% of the patients showed malnourished or were at risk. Conclusion: the great majority of patients was malnourished or at risk and it was found low levels of albumin and hemoglobin. The diagnosis of hospitalization more often was infectious causes, they were with the highest mortality. Malnourished or at risk patients with low levels of hemoglobin and albumin stayed at the hospital for more than 15 days.
