Curando y colectando aves para incrementar la información de la colección ornitológica del Museo de Historia Natural de la Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS-AV)

dc.description.abstractLas colecciones biológicas son fuentes de información, invaluables e irremplazables para estudiar la vida en todas sus formas. Los objetos biológicos que resguardan ofrecen información fundamental sobre la biodiversidad en un tiempo y espacio determinados a la que no podría accederse de otras maneras. De hecho, el valor científico de los especímenes de colección y sus datos asociados no hace otra cosa que incrementarse a través del tiempo. El desarrollo de la tecnología para propósitos científicos en años recientes ha puesto de manifiesto el enorme potencial que exhiben los especímenes de colección para resolver preguntas de gran envergadura en múltiples disciplinas del conocimiento. La ornitología no es la excepción, las tradicionales pieles de estudio de aves (especímenes voucher) se emplean actualmente en escenarios científicos que los colectores de siglos pasados nunca hubiesen imaginado. En este estudio, se revisaron las etiquetas de 2152 especímenes de aves de la colección ornitológica de la Universidad Industrial de Santander (UIS-AV), y se recuperaron datos biológicos obtenidos de estas para 934 especímenes, actualizándose la información del 32% de la colección y completando la curaduría del 72% de la misma. Adicionalemente se hicieron recolectas en un bosque húmedo premontano de Floridablanca, Santander, Colombia sin registros previos para UIS-AV, de 16 especímenes de aves que se prepararon como especímenes voucher y se ingresaron a la colección con todos sus datos asociados y muestras de tejidos para ampliar las fuentes de información molecular. Entre las especies ingresadas se encontraron dos nuevos registros para UIS-AV: Ochthoeca cinnamomeiventris y Heliodoxa leadbeateri. Para poner en contexto la información de UIS-AV en relación a la diversidad de Santander, se comparó el número de especies de aves para Santander registrado en UIS-AV con una lista de especies para la misma entidad geográfica construido a partir de los registros digitales disponibles que refieren evidencia de especímenes voucher y grabaciones de audio, hallando que UIS-AV tiene evidencia soportada para el 64% de las especies del departamento.
dc.description.abstractenglishBiological collections are invaluable and irreplaceable tools for studying, documenting, and understanding life in all its forms. The biological objects that they keep offer fundamental information about biodiversity in a given time and space that could not be accessed in other ways. In fact, the value of collection specimens and their associated data does nothing but increase over time. The development of technology for scientific purposes in recent years has highlighted the enormous potential that collection specimens exhibit to answer far-reaching questions in multiple disciplines of knowledge. Ornithology is no exception, traditional bird study skins (voucher specimens) are currently used in scientific scenarios that collectors of past centuries would never have imagined. In this study, the labels of 2152 bird specimens from the ornithological collection of the Industrial University of Santander (UIS-AV) were reviewed, and biological data obtained from these were digitized for 934 specimens, updating the information of 32% of the total collection.and completing the curatorship of 72% of it. In a segment of a premontane humid forest of Floridablanca without previous records for UIS-AV, 16 bird specimens were collected, which were prepared as voucher specimens and entered into the collection with all their associated data and tissue samples to expand the sources of molecular information. Among the species joined, two new records were found: Ochthoeca cinnamomeiventris and Heliodoxa leadbeateri. The number of bird species for Santander registered in UIS-AV was compared with a list of species for the same geographical entity built from the available digital records that refer to voucher evidence and audio recording, finding that UIS-AV has covers 64% of the species.
