dc.description.abstractLa agricultura cafetera impulsó el desarrollo económico en la Provincia de Soto. El caso del distrito de Rionegro simboliza un caso particular, ya que representó un crecimiento económico y demográfico inusual, más acelerado que cualquier otro municipio en el departamento. Dicho crecimiento estuvo muy ligado al precio del café en el mercado internacional, ya que fue el departamento de Santander pionero en la producción del grano durante las últimas décadas del siglo XIX. La disminución en el precio internacional del café significó para la nación una recesión económica que con los años se convirtió en crisis y arrastró al país a la guerra civil más costosa y devastadora de su historia hasta el momento. Con el objetivo de medir el crecimiento económico en el municipio se analizaron los protocolos notariales correspondientes a los años: 1880, 1888, 1895 y 1899. También se aprovecharon las investigaciones similares para ubicarse en el contexto de los acontecimientos y complementar datos. El objetivo principal de hallar las causas que rezagaron la producción del departamento, respecto a la producción cafetera del occidente del país que aumentó considerablemente después de la Guerra de los Mil Días se alcanzó. Se establecieron como las causas: la falta de mejora en las visa de transporte de carga, la falta de implementación de las tecnologías existentes para el sector, las guerras civiles se iniciaron y decidieron en el departamento de Santander, donde se vivió con más fuerza la conflagración, y finalmente el descubrimiento en el occidente de Colombia de condiciones geográficas, climáticas y químicas de suelo que aumentaron la producción por hectárea comparado con la producción del oriente de Colombia.
dc.description.abstractenglishThe coffee agriculture promoted the economic development in Soto province. The case of the district of Rionegro symbolizes a particular case, because represented an unusual economic and demographic growing, more accelerated than any other municipality in the region. This growing was very bound to price of the coffee in the international market, because the department of Santander was pioneer in the production of the grain in the lasts decades of XIX century. The decrease in the coffee international price meant for the nation an economic recession, and through the years it became a crisis, that dragged the country to a civil war that was the most expensive and devastating in its history until now. With de goal of measure the economic grow in the region, the notarial protocols for 1880, 1888, 1895 and 1899 were analyzed. Also some similar investigations were exploited to be located in the context of the events and complement information. The main objective of find the causes of the decrease in the production in the department, respect the coffee production in the west of the country that raised considerably after the war of the thousand days was reached. The causes that were established are: the lack of an improvement in the transport of the visas of load transport, the lack of implementation of technologies for the sector, the civil wars that began and finished in Santander department, which caused a high impact in the region, and finally the discover in the west of Colombia of lands with geographic, climatic and chemicals conditions, with better production by hectare compared with the east of Colombia.
